The Dilts Quarry was not included in the work this year per your request. The previous years we had
minimal growth of C.thistle, but with the above average moisture these past 2 years, and the knapweed
that is growing on adjacent properties, it would be beneficial to visit this quarry in 2017.
As stated earlier, the Boettcher Sandstone Quarry is seeing heavy re-growth in s.thistle, as well as new
growth, and moderate re-growth of L.spurge. We also discovered a new infestation of L.spurge growing
up the hill to the west. We treated these infestations aggressively, but there has been a considerable
amount of earth being graded and moved in the pit which has not only caused another disturbance, but has
limited our access to the pit and perimeter of the property. After our visit in the spring this year and
noticing the amount of earth being moved, I decided to make a return visit shortly after our initial
application to monitor and re-growth and noticed a couple dozen new S.thistle rosettes that germinated in
the newly graded area that hadn't germinated a couple of weeks prior. I again treated the new growth but
wasn't able to go back in the fall of 2016 to monitor treatments. All the work being done in this quarry is
cause for concern with the spread of seed due to the disturbance. I am not sure of Holcim's intentions
with this quarry moving forward, but monitoring and continued treatment of this quarry will assure we
cover all re-growth, and feel confident that we do not lose control of past seasons treatments.
Based on our#'s from this year, compared to last, we have seen a decrease in the overall amount
of acres we treated on Holcim properties, but we must look at this conservatively due to the weather in
Larimer County this growing season. Noxious weeds flourished early this year with the optimal growing
conditions but as I stated before, it ended abruptly with the drought like conditions the remainder of the
season and if we continue to see these weather patterns over the next couple of years, I wouldn't see why
we couldn't decrease the infestations another 45-50%. Our aggressive applications and use of only the
most effective, newest herbicides and control methods should assist us in better controlling these sites
next year. We highly recommend continued monitoring of the quarries in 2017,and treating the re-growth
accordingly.
I have attached a summary of the total hours our crew worked on the properties broken down into
equipment,as well as total acres treated and herbicide(s)used. Several pictures of the site are attached
below, but if it is necessary to see more, please don't hesitate to ask and I can email more.
Thanks again for the opportunity,
Bill Pawleshyn
Weed Specialist 11
Larimer County Department of Natural Resources-Land Stewardship Program
Summary Breakdown:
