5.0 Results
The cultural resource inventory encountered and documented one newly recorded prehistoric site (5LP
11050) at the original MW -4 well location. An alternative location was surveyed nearby so the site would
not be affected by the project. Site type, cultural affiliation, and the NRHP evaluation for 5LP 11050 are
summarized below in Table 5.1.
Table 5.1 Site Summary Table
CO Site No. SEAS Temporary Cultural Affiliation/ Site Type NRHP Eligibility
Site No. I Recommendation
51-P 11050 SEAS Site 16-098-01 i Ancestral Pueblo, Basketmaker III (ca. The drainage in Pietetlot Gulch is 340 m east. Ground surface on and surrounding
the site slopes 0 to 5 degrees and the aspect is southeast. Based on the nature of the loess mantle, the
dense growth of big sagebrush that requires deep soils, and road cuts, soil depth exceeds 100 cm. Soils
consist of reddish brown silt loam calcareous loess with few sandstone gravel inclusions. The
environment appears depositional on the nearly level crest area and possibly on the lower slopes.
Vegetation covers 50 percent of the ground surface. The overstory includes Colorado pinon pine and
Utah juniper and the understory is primarily composed of big sagebrush, slender wheatgrass, yellow
alyssum, broom snakeweed, Wrights clubflower, redroot buckwheat, Gambel oak, black sagebrush,
smooth brome, wild crabapple, cliff fendlerbush, linaria penstemon, and Richardson's bitterweed. The
previously plowed areas have transformed into big sagebrush scrublands with remnants of unchained
pinon juniper woodland and an understory characterized by chaparral shrubs, particularly Gambel oak,
wild crabapple, mountain mahogany, and cliff fendlerbush. The site was subject to historical pinon-
juniper chaining followed by plowing to create a dry pasture. The site is in poor to fair condition due to
historic and modern disturbance sources. However, wind and water erosion appear minimal, and no
erosional rills have formed on the site surface. Sand Court Road likely impacted and obscured the
northwest site boundary and the driveway to 620 Sand Court Road may have obscured the limits of the
An Intensive CRI for GCC Energy's Proposed Groundwater Monitoring Wells
on State and Private Lands in La Plata County, CO
SEAS 16-098 October 2016
19
