The La Plata River empties into the San Juan River near Farmington, NM. The San Juan <br />River is a main tributary of the Southern Colorado River Basin. Current and historic land use in the <br />project vicinity includes coal mining, irrigated agriculture, livestock grazing and ranching, woodcutting, <br />hunting, and rural residential areas. <br />3.1 Climate, Geology, and Soils <br />The nearest settlement for which historical climate records are available is from Fort Lewis (Station <br />053016) for the period 1948 to 2005 (WRCC 2016). Table 3.1 summarizes climatic data from the station. <br />Average annual maximum temperature at the Fort Lewis climate station is 58.3° F and average annual <br />minimum temperature is 28.1 ° F for the same period. The frost -free growing season lasts from 120 to <br />140 days (Pannell 1981). Average annual total precipitation is 18.13 inches and average total snowfall is <br />44 inches. April, May, and June are the driest months of the year, ranging from 0.68 inches in June to <br />1. 16 inches in April.
