PERMIT #: M-2007-044
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: SJM
INSPECTION DATE: October 12, 2016
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the Whirlwind Mine; permit number M-2007-044. This site is
located about seven miles southeast of Gateway, Colorado in Mesa County. I, Stephanie Mitchell of the
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted the inspection. Mr. Abel Mendoza and Mr.
David Turk of Western Fuels accompanied me on the inspection. Eric Eckberg with the Bureau of Land
Management was also present.
The permit area for this site is designated as 31.91 acres with 22.60 of maximum allowed disturbance. The
Whirlwind Mine is a 112d underground mine. The post mine land used designated for this site is Rangeland.
The proper mine identification sign was in place, and the entire permit boundary was walked, and all the
corners of the permit area were marked with posts and delineated with a fence.
The site is currently inactive and in Temporary Cessation status. Two propane tanks were on site, but empty.
No fuel is being stored on site and all buildings, including the portal are secured. Energy Fuels is waiting for the
price of Uranium to increase before starting up mining operations again.
No problems were observed at this site.
Photographs are included at the end of this report in order to illustrate some of the conditions observed
during this inspection.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Stephanie Mitchell at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado
81501, phone number (970) 242-5025.
