Blasting Impacts and Rock Slope Stability Assessment for Cottonwood Quarry w Gmod County,CO
5.0 STABILITY OF MINED ROCK SLOPES
Inspection of area outcrops of rock indicate that the igneous rock at the site, believed to be
Granodiorite or Andesite, reveals that the rock is very competent and not deteriorated by
weathering or chemical effects. The nearvertical slope of near-by rock projections suggests that
stable rock walls can be mined in this rock.
Joints observed in outcropping rock were tight and cemented. No rock borings have been done
and no rock slopes are exposed within the proposed mining permit area. Hence, the author's
opinion about the stability of future mined rock walls is very general and is not supported by any
evaluations of actual data regarding the physical and structural properties of the rock at the
Cottonwood site.
If quarry development plans proceed, it would be wise to examine subsurface rock conditions by
doing some test excavations and rock borings.
6.0 FINDINGS
1. The author finds absolutely no issue that could prevent the execution of physically safe
and environmentally compliant blasting operations at the Cottonwood Quarry.
2. Preliminary inspections of the condition exposed area rock outcrops indicate that stable
blasted rock slopes can be developed at the Cottonwood Quarry Site.
REVEY Associates,Inc.
