Wetland Delineation Report for the Global Assets Mine Property, Weld County, Colorado
Potential for Occurrence: No habitats associated with the Mining Area could serve as primary
habitat for the Preble's meadow jumping mouse; however, the dense vegetation may serve
as secondary, migratory habitat for the mouse. The Lupton Meadows Ditch is greater than one
mile from suitable riparian habitat and the closest positive trapping for the mouse is 13.0 miles
to the north or 18 river miles, just east of Milliken in 2001 (USFWS 2015). As well, seven
separate trapping efforts were performed between 1999 and 2001 within 2 miles on the South
Platte River, and no Preble's were found. Nevertheless, given the quality of the vegetation and
of the upland habitat within and adjacent to the Lupton Meadows ditch, and the presence of
a suitable dispersal corridor in the vicinity (i.e., the South Platte River), the potential for the
ditch to serve as Preble's mouse migratory habitat cannot be completely discounted.
Determination of Impact: May affect, is not likely to adversely affect. The quality of the habitat
along the Lupton Meadows Ditch could potentially support migratory behavior of the Preble's
meadow jumping mouse. However, there are no records of the species within the project
area. Consequently, any negative impacts to the mouse are very unlikely.
4.5.4 Colorado Butterfly Plant
Habitat and Range Requirements:The Colorado butterfly plant has been listed under the ESA
since October 2000 (USFWS 2010). It occupies wetland habitats along meandering stream
channels of the high plains. This plant typically prefers open habitat where surrounding
vegetation is not substantially overgrown, and in undisturbed areas it is found in association
with native grasses. It is found primarily in southeastern Wyoming, north-central Colorado,
and extreme western Nebraska (USFWS 2010).
Potential for Occurrence: The proposed project is within the range for the species but no
suitable habitat was observed during surveys. Colorado butterfly plant is unlikely to occur in
the project area.
Determination of Impact: No effect.
4.5.5 Ute Ladies'-tresses orchid
Habitat and Range Requirements: Ute ladies'-tresses primarily occupy moist, irrigated or
seasonally flooded soils in valley bottoms, gravel bars, old oxbows, or floodplains bordering
springs, lakes, rivers, or perennial streams at elevations between 1,800 to 6,800 feet above
mean sea level. Some occurrences have been found on agricultural lands managed for winter
or early season grazing or hay production. Known sites often have low vegetative cover and
may be subjected to periodic disturbances, such as flooding or grazing (Fertig et al. 2005).
Potential for Occurrence: The proposed project is within the range for the species but no
suitable habitat was observed during surveys. Ute ladies'-tresses orchid is unlikely to occur in
the project area.
Determination of Impact: No effect.
15 2DOT
