Mapping Best Practices:
1. Make sure all font is of a legible size, (12 or greater depending on the
feature).
2. Try to assure that all font reads horizontally from left to right.
3. Make sure that features are not obscuring labels.
4. Create light background layers (i.e. topo lines) so that layers placed on top
are visible and legible.
5. Create bold or large enough size font to read topo elevations. Topo elevatior
values should be placed offset (preferred) or on top of topo lines, rather than
under topo lines.
6. Try as much as possible to avoid more than seven layers on any one map. A
map tells a story. Anything over seven layers and the map becomes
confusing and the story difficult to discern.
7. Make sure all map layers are associated with a legend item.
8. Strive for consistency in terminology and naming between permit and map.
9. Include in all maps:
o A legend
o A north arrow
o A scale bar and information relating to the scale bar (e.g. one inch =
500 ft).
o Projection Information: Please use UTM, NAD 1983 Colorado Zone
13N
