Table 2 Parameters Used in Slope Stability Analysis
Notes
1) For some stability runs, the matric suction was included for this material to determine its effect on the computed
factor of safety. The volumetric water content function was used in this exercise. It was estimated based on the
saturated volumetric water content, grain size data, and liquid limit.
2) NL= non-linear strength envelope of the following normal stress/shear strength pairs (in psf): (0,0) (2089,981)
(8354,3615).
The colluvium shear strength parameters were derived from laboratory tests, while the carbonaceous
shale and shale non-linear strength envelope was derived from the Stark and Eid (1994, 1997)
correlation using a liquid limit of 51.1% and a clay -size fraction between 25 and 45%. This envelope
is halfway between the fully softened and residual envelopes. The other parameters were selected
based on engineering judgment.
For the carbonaceous shale layer found in the exposed bedrock bench, fully -softened and residual
shear strength testing was performed in the laboratory. The fully -softened envelope was used in the
modeling using the non-linear shear strength envelope shown below in Table 3.
Table 3 Fully Softened Shear Strength Envelope for Carbonaceous Shale
P \Mpls\06 CO\26\06261003 Haul Road Slide Repair\WorkFiles\Report\MCC_Slump_Repatr-Instrumentation-Drain Rev 2012-12-12.docx 5
