The second best alternative is to plant a fall cover crop consisting of a mix of a sterile cereal grain
(Quickguard or Regreen)and tillage radish.Quickguard and Regreen are sterile triticale varieties
and will act similarly to a wheat cover crop but will eliminate the necessity to terminate the wheat
crop prior to seed emergence or rely on spraying out any volunteer wheat. Drill Quickguard at 50
pounds per acre and tillage radish(Nitro radish)at 1-2 pounds per acre between September 1 and
October 15.The tillage radish will winter kill and will not compete with the permanent Seed Mix
and the Quickguard will mature in late spring. It is possible the quickguard will winter kill, but so
long as it is planted early(as close to September 1 as possible)it will likely have provided enough
cover given adequate moisture to drill the Seed Mix into even if it winterkills. This cover crop mix
will provide mulch and a microclimate for the permanent Seed Mix while addressing compaction
with the tillage radish and jump starting the soil microbiology.
Seeding of AQ4euEural Disturbed Areas
The following gFaSS seed mix will be used in reclamation for all disturbed areas and replaces the
agricultural seed mix in the previous reclamation plan.agfieUItural aFea aefe& The permanent
Seed Mix will be no-till drilled according to the cover crop method elected as described below. This
seed mix includes seeds for native shrubs, eliminating the need for shrub plantings.
Method 1:
The permanent Seed Mix will be no-till drilled into the standing cover crop between November 1
and May 15 of the following year.A no-till grass drill with three boxes, double disk openers and
depth bands i—inch or less and press wheels must be used and the permanent Seed Mix should be
drilled at 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. The Seed Mix must be ordered with the species separated either
by species or by seed type so that they can be properly placed into the correct box on thedrill.
Cracked corn will likely need to be added to the large smooth seeded species such as Rocky
Mountain Bee plant to get the proper seeding rate out of the grain box on the grass drill. Four-
wing saltbrush should be planted in a separate drill operation at 1"deep.
Method 2:
The permanent Seed Mix can be no-till drilled into the standing cover crop stubble the following
November 1 to May 15 if the field is kept weed free with chemical fallow.Alternatively, the Seed
Mix can be no-till drilled into the growing Quickguard in April or May following planting if
chemical fallow is not an option. All seeding considerations for equipment and seed ordering are
the same as in Method 1.
The following seed Fates aFe based 9ff444-,eedft,-4-broadc-arA4n4E44Gds afe used, the seed FatesaFe
dek4li '
