PERMIT#: M-1992-113
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:TCW
INSPECTION DATE:October 19,2016
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection conducted by TC Wait of DRMS; Mr. Curtis Sniff was present
representing the operator. The site is located about 1.5 miles east of Hasty off of County Road JJ, north of the
John Martin Reservoir. The site was last inspected in September 2012. The permit area is 89.85 acres. Based
on aerial imagery(GoogleEarth, 6/2/2014), the disturbed area is approximately 37 acres.
At the time of this inspection, the site was dry and mining operations were occurring along the western side of
the site. The entrance road was marked with the permit sign, which was weathered and needing repair, and
the permit boundaries were marked with tires at the corners.
No processing equipment was onsite other than a single dozer and a grizzly. Several stockpiles of material
were observed in the pit floor and throughout the site. Mr. Sniff indicated that the County was reworking a pit
that was owned by another Operator, and many of the scattered smaller piles are left over from the previous
operator.Topsoil has been salvaged and piled outside of the pit.
i
Some rilling erosion was noted on the stockpiles located in the pit, and an area along the northern wall west o4
the access road had sizable erosion observed. Mr. Sniff indicated that the County had started to put an access
ramp in that location, but abandoned the effort and that created an erosion issue. This area should be
stabilized to prevent further erosion and damage. No standing water was observed in the pit, however
claystone was exposed in the lower part of the central area of the pit that likely collects and holds water for a
time after storms.
Portions of the disturbed area, particularly on the east side of the pit, are well-vegetated from native species
that have grown in from adjacent land. DRMS encourages the County to finish cleaning up the remaining
stockpiles in these areas and begin reclamation work toward release of areas that are no longer being actively
mined.
The site is generally stable and in acceptable condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. The Operator should begin site grading and revegetation toward reclamation in areas where mining)
has finished.
2. The Operator should repair the eroded area on the north wall west of the access road to prevent
further damage.
3. Weed management should continue to discourage noxious weed growth at the pit.
4. The Operator should repair the weathered permit sign so that it is legible.
