PERMIT#: M-2003-070
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:TCW
INSPECTION DATE: October 18,2016
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection conducted by TC Wait of DRMS. The Division left voice messages for
Mr. Peter Dawson about the inspection, however a representative of the Operator was not present at the time
of the site visit. The site is located about 17 miles south of Springfield and 8.5 miles east of Hwy 287 north of
CR M. The site was last inspected in January 2012. At the time of this inspection, the site was dry and no
active mining operations were occurring. A dozer, screen, and conveyor were located in the east part of the
pit. The entrance road was marked with the permit sign. The affected area is located in the southwestern
corner of the permit area. According to the Annual Report dated January 2016, approximately 15 acres of the
allotted 20 acres of affected area have been disturbed.
Topsoil was observed around the perimeter of the pit. The topsoil stockpiles were vegetated and stable. The
pit slopes are at a 3:1 grade or flatter. Stockpiles of material are located on the pit floor. The active
excavation area appears to be along the eastern edge of the pit. No reclamation work appears to have been
done at this point.
Some standing water was observed in a excavated depression near the center of the northern slope. This
water is likely runoff from a past storm. Some weed growth was noted as well as minor erosion and rilling
along the pit slopes. Sediment does not appear to have been transported out of the disturbed area by runoff.
The site is generally stable and in acceptable condition.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. The Operator should implement weed management on the site to reduce the weed growth. This is
not being cited as a problem at this point, but without weed control measures, may be in the
future.
2. As mining progresses, the Operator should work to bring already worked areas to final grade and
begin reclamation so that seeds have time to establish.
