the upper portions that the Yoast Mine discharges into have no fish
present. Tables 14 (Yampa Segment 13e) 16 (Yampa Segment 13i) and 18
(Yampa Segment 13j) provide a comparison of those standards to water
quality data collected this year from NPDES and stream sites in those
basins. Standards that were exceeded are:
Parameter
Iron, Total Recoverable (TR)
Selenium, Diss., chronic
Selenium, Diss., acute
Selenium, Pot. Diss., chronic
Selenium, Tot. Rec., chronic
# of Sites / # of Excursions
2/4
1/1
1/1
1/2
3/4
The total recoverable iron standard (1.0 mg/1) was exceeded four times
at two sites this year (YSGFS and YSG5) with a high of 2.76 mg/l. Iron
excursions were likely the result of high suspended solids (TSS) and are
generally observed during snowmelt runoff. This strict aquatic life
standard was exceeded in over half of the pre -mining stream samples.
SCC ran selenium in three forms this year, often on the same samples, so
as to investigate the difference in the three methods. However, in a
regulatory sense, the potentially dissolved form is applicable to NPDES
sites, and the dissolved form is applicable to stream sites. The total
recoverable form was run only as a quality control check. The following
discussion will focus only on potential dissolved excursions at NPDES
sites and dissolved excursions at steam sites.
One spoil spring site exceeded the dissolved acute selenium standard,
18.4 ug/l. Spoil Spring YSSPG3 displayed a value of 57.7 ug/l on June
21d. Selenium values at the downstream outfall, 012, from samples
collected this year were all below 4.6 ug/l.
One stream site exceeded the dissolved chronic selenium standard, 4.6
ug/l. Lower Grassy Creek site YSG5 displayed a value of 15.7 ug/1 on
March 13th. Selenium values at all outfalls (010 and 011 at Yoast, and
002 at the Peabody Sage Creek Mine) from samples collected on the same
14
