Using your professional knowledge of the region, why are there none or very limited cultural remains
in the project area? Is there subsurface potential? The Class III inventory did not result in the location of
any cultural resources. The site density in the general area is low. Typically sites documented in the area
are limited to isolated finds or open lithic surface scatters, open camps or historic sites. Eligible
prehistoric open camp sites are generally found in eolian sand deposits. Several types of sand deposits
present favorable conditions for preserving intact cultural deposits including stabilized sand which has
accumulated gradually over time. Stabilized sand deposits in Northwestern Colorado contain evidence of
prehistoric occupations dating from the Paleoindian to Late Prehistoric periods. However, given the
mobile nature of most sand deposits, it is not uncommon to have mixed cultural occupations on the same
surface. There are relatively few such deposits present in the study area. Historic cultural resources
including irrigation ditches, historic roads/trails, sheepherder camps, and well locations are also present in
the general area.
No further work is recommended for the proposed Class III Cultural Resource Inventory for the
Terminal Segment of the Haul Road for Colowyo Coal Company's Proposed Collom Gulch Strip Mine
No cultural material was observed during the inventory and the project will result in no historic properties
affected.
Colorado Decision Support System
2014 State of Colorado Water Rights Data.
