Q, , Transit Mix Concrete Co.
the Little Fountain Creek watershed. The unnamed tributary to Little Fountain Creek is
upstream from Deadman Canyon, and this area is referred to as Deadman Creek in this permit
application.
a. Little Turkey Creek
Little Turkey Creek flows northwest to southeast through the proposed quarry area before
flowing southeast under Highway 115 and into Turkey Creek. Turkey Creek flows south
approximately 25 miles and discharges into the Arkansas River upstream from Pueblo,
Colorado. The Little Turkey Creek watershed extends approximately 5 miles to the west of the
project area with a maximum elevation of 10132' msl, and this area is approximately 5.9 square
miles. Little Turkey Creek flows under Highway 115 at an elevation of approximately 6500'
msl. The proposed quarry was designed to minimize impacts to Little Turkey Creek. No mining
will occur within 100 feet of the centerline of the stream, and bottom of the mining pit will remain
at least 10 feet above the stream thalweg at all times. Figure G-5 shows the typical relation of
the stream to the mining activities. The area between the edge of the pit and the stream will
drain toward the stream. The disturbed area will drain toward the pit and sediment pond within
the pit area. Two crossings of Little Turkey Creek are the only proposed disturbances to the
creek within the 100-foot buffer. The first crossing provides access to the North Pit area in the
middle of the quarry area, and the second crossing is along the site access road approximately
1,500 feet from Highway 115. Creek crossing designs are discussed in Section 4c.
Norwest Corporation (Norwest) established a surface water monitoring station, LTC-1, on the
Little Turkey Creek in June 2015 on behalf of Transit Mix. The LTC-1 station is located
approximately 1.5 miles upstream from where Highway 115 crosses over Little Turkey Creek
south of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Figure G-1. The station collects stream depth data every
15 minutes using a Solinst Level Logger. Flow measurements and water quality samples are
collected quarterly at the station. A total of five sampling events have been conducted since LTC-
1 was established. Figure G-2 illustrates LTC-1 during the August 2015 visit.
Hitch Rack Ranch Quarry Permit Application M-2016-010
September 15, 2016 G-3
