3.2.2 General, Disturbed and Affected Area
The Mine is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, west of State
Highway 13. The great majority of the permit area and current operations (including the mine
pits, the administrative building, shops, warehouses, and rail loadout facility) are located in
Moffat County. A small percentage of the area is in Rio Blanco County.
All new disturbance associated with PR -04, 155.1 acres, is in Moffat County.
3.2.3 Coal Resources to be Mined
In the Collom permit expansion area, Colowyo will mine coal in the Danforth Hills coal field.
Coal seams Y, X, A, B, C, E, F, and G are proposed to be mined in the Collom Pit. Seam
thicknesses vary in the Collom permit expansion area from 5 to 11 feet. The general stratigraphy
within the Collom permit expansion area is depicted in Exhibit 6, Item 7, Figure 3. 1, and Exhibit
6, Item 8.
3.2.4 Topography
The Collom permit expansion area is located west of the West Pit, and expands the current
western permit boundary to just west of Collom Gulch. It is bounded on the west by Morgan
Creek, and includes Collom Gulch, Little Collom Gulch and the West Fork of Jubb Creek.
Elevations in the Collom permit expansion area range from just below approximately 6,400 feet
mean sea level to approximately 8,570 feet. Slopes in the Collom permit expansion area range
from moderately steep to steep drainages (> 35 percent) to benches between the drainages (from
1 percent to 5 percent). The predominant land uses in the Collom permit expansion area are
rangeland and fish and wildlife habitat, with smaller acreage characterized as pastureland.
3.2.5 Geology
Geologic information is found in Sections 2.04.6, Maps 7 through 9A, and Exhibit 6 of the PAP.
The permit area and Collom permit expansion area are south of the axis of the Axial Basin
Anticline, a large northwest -trending fold found in the southern Uinta region of the Piceance
Basin. The southern limb of the Axial Basin anticline is shared with the Collom syncline. The
southern limb of the Axial Basin anticline is shared with the Collom syncline. The anticline and
syncline consist of thousands of feet of marine deposited sediments of Cretaceous age.
PR -04, Colowyo Coal Mine C1981-019 18 August 2016
