h
ti
i
+7
r
i
a
Figure 5: Plan view of the mill platform area showing the lined area of the mill platform. The additional area to the
southwest is also lined however it is not part of the sink or basin shown by the blue dashed perimeter. It is however
tied into Phase 4 of VLF 1. Source:On-site surveying and as-built data,2014.
As demonstrated above,Newmont has environmental controls in place that are adequate to
contain any fluids not captured in the primary or secondary containment features already in
place. In the event of an upset condition, Newmont has almost two orders of magnitude greater
capacity in the tertiary containment, than in the existing secondary containment. In addition,
capacity of the tertiary containment will be increased once the VLF 2 Phase I liner is tied-in to
the HGM platform liner. Figure 4 indicates the VLF 2 Phase I liner location relative to the HGM
lined platform. Completion of this connection to VLF 2 is anticipated by August 31St, 2016.
Summary
For the afore mentioned reasons,Newmont believes the updated primary containment controls in
place and planned for the immediate future, the secondary containment features in place, and the
tertiary containment are protective of the environment.
Should you require further information please do not hesitate to contact me at(719) 689- 4055 or
Meg Burtgnewmont.com.
