New Elk became aware of the discharge on June 7th and initiated sampling.
However, GEI consultants could not arrange for and start the WET as the
sample would have exceeded the hold time. This will continue to be a
problem for unexpected short term discharges resulting from storm events.
New Elk and GEI are working on a solution.
Flocculent had been applied to the Pond prior to the storm events, but was
not successful in avoiding the exceedance. NALCO chemical has been
contacted and is analyzing the pond discharge to determine a potential
alternative solution to the problem. The mine is also looking into a filtration
system to treat the pond water prior to discharge.
Pond 7 primary discharge remained closed during the storm events and no
discharge occurred. Procedures similar to those for pond 8 are being
investigated for pond 7 as a similar problem is expected.
Please contact me if there are any questions or if additional information is
required.
Regards,
Ron Thompson
Agent/Operator in Responsible Charge
CC: Louis Head NECC
Jim Begano, NECC
Eric Mink, CDPHE
