County Road 27
Loveland, CO 80538
Dear Mr. Sprague:
On behalf of the Geology faculty of the Department of Plant and Earth Science,
University of Wisconsin-River Falls, I'd like to thank you for your donation of
fossil specimens for use in our teaching collection. The two beautiful spe imens
which you donated in July 1991 are fascinating and will make a valuable addition to
our trace fossil collection. I am sure they will generate a lot of discussion.
I have enclosed two articles you may find interesting. The first, by Walker and
Harms, although fairly technical, is the classic work dealing with the Lyon
Sandstone. Note mention of fossil trackways on page 283. I haven't check ad the
original literature on the "Scorpionid" tracks to see if they match your trac ways,
but your other specimen is a reptile track. The second article just came oul and
illustrates tracks just like those in your quarry. I'll keep you in touch as I learn more
about these trackway sites.
I have estimated the value of the fossil specimens based on prices quoted b
commercial dealers for similar material (Geol()gical Enterprises, Inc.). I would
estimate the value of the reptile trackway at $200 and the "insect" track at 1100.
I
Again, thank you for your generous donation.
Sincerely,
Michael D.
