PPO"M LARAMIDE
Statement of Qualifications N Environmental,LLC
of California and Nevada. The assessment was performed on behalf of a Native
American Tribe with trust and allotted lands in the area.
The project included evaluation of the quantity and quality of water resources available
to the Tribe. Data from various federal and state databases and reports were
consolidated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) that was used to assess
water resources in the basin. Several site visits yielded additional information on the
status of Tribal water rights, active wells and water diversion facilities, and the locations
of potential sources of contamination both within and outside Tribal trust lands. The
interaction between the Carson River and the underlying aquifer was evaluated using a
numerical groundwater model.
Walter performed a preliminary evaluation of potential impacts on Tribal water
resources from an abandoned copper/sulfur mine in the headwaters of the basin. The
evaluation included review of available surface-water, groundwater, and sediment data
to determine the extents of downstream impacts from metal-laden water released from
the site.
Results of the water resource assessment were presented to the Tribal government.
Reports were prepared describing the assessment and evaluating wellhead protection
issues. A Wellhead Protection Program was developed and submitted to the Tribal
government and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Technical Review
Technical Review of RI/FS and EE/CA Documents, Illinois: Laramide and a team of risk-
assessment experts are providing technical review of RI/FS and EE/CA documents on
behalf of the USEPA. The site includes several unlined landfills containing a variety of
chemical wastes. An estimated 1 million cubic yards of waste materials are included in
the landfill areas, with the bases of most of the landfills beneath the water table.
Discharges from the landfills have severely degraded groundwater quality with a variety
of organic and inorganic contaminants, threatening a nearby stream, lake, and the
Mississippi River.
Laramide has provided technical comments on the results of groundwater
investigations and on proposed remediation activities. Along with its subcontracted
experts in risk assessment, Laramide has reviewed and commented on baseline and
residual ecological risk assessments performed by the Potentially Responsible Parties
(PRPs) for the site. We have participated in several conference calls with the PRPs to
help streamline the project planning and review process and improve the quality of
future data collection efforts.
We continue to provide technical review services for this project. Ongoing project
phases include assessment of DNAPL contamination and proposals for either
remediation of residual DNAPL or further evaluations to justify a technical
impracticability waiver for the site.
August 2004 Page 6 of 7
