BLM Recommended Seed Mix for Rifle Limestone Quarry 3/21/2016
1. lbs PLS (Pounds of Pure Live Seed) = lbs bulk seed x % germination x % purity
2. Sagebrush seed should be inoculated with the appropriate mycorrhizal fungi
3. The seed shall contain no prohibited or restricted noxious weed seeds and shall contain no more
than 0.5 percent by weight of other weed seeds. Seed may contain up to 2.0 percent of "other
crop" seed by weight, including the seed of other agronomic crops and native plants; however, a
lower percentage of other crop seed is recommended. Seed tags or other official
documentation shall be submitted to BLM at least 14 days before the date of proposed seeding
for acceptance. Seed that does not meet the above criteria shall not be applied to public lands.
4. If any species listed are not available at the time of purchase, the BLM may approve a deviation
from the mix. Any substitutions must be approved in advance by CRVFO.
5. Applying seed just prior to winter snowfall or on top of snow is preferable as it generally
provides the best environmental conditions for seed germination and establishment.
Reclamation results will be assessed during the second growing season following seeding. If
revegetation is unsuccessful, the operator shall implement subsequent reseedings until
successful establishment is achieved. Grasses and forbs shall be broadcast seed in subsequent
seedings, but sagebrush and rabbitbrush shall be planted as container or bare root stock in late
winter or early spring. Seedlings should be inoculated with the appropriate species of
mycorrhizal fungi. Seedlings shall be covered with weed -free mulch to improve moisture
retention and mesh tubes shall be staked around the seedlings to prevent herbivory. Seedlings
can be planted in clusters of 20-30 seedlings in appropriate microsites as identified by BLM.
7. Soil amendments such as fertilizer may enhance revegetation success. Requests for soil
amendments shall be submitted to the CRVFO for approval.
The operator is responsible for controlling noxious weeds within the disturbed area. A Pesticide
Use Proposal (PUP) must be submitted to BLM and approved prior to the application of any
herbicides.
Application
Common Name
Scientific Name
VaHe
Rate (lbs PLS*/ac)
Slender wheatgrass
Elymus trachycoulus
San Luis, Revenue, or
ssp. trachycaulus
Pryor
2.6
Bluebunch wheatgrass
Pseudoroegneria spicato
Anatone or Goldar
3.3
Canby bluegrass
Poo secunda ssp. conbyi
Canbar
0.4
Prairie junegrass
Koeleria mocrantho
VNS
0.15
Rubber rabbitbrush
Chrysothomnus nauseosus
VNS
0.4
Basin big sagebrush
Artemisia tridentate
ssp. tridentate
VNS
0.1
Western yarrow
Achillea millefolium
VNS
0.9
Lewis flax
Linum lewlsli
Maple Grove
1_4
TOTAL
9.3 lbs PLS/ac
1. lbs PLS (Pounds of Pure Live Seed) = lbs bulk seed x % germination x % purity
2.
