Tr
ansit Mix Concrete Co.
Mountain Shrubland
This community occupies 598 acres (39%) and is highly variable as it intergrades with stands of
pinyon -juniper and ponderosa pine. Principal shrub species are Gambel oak, mountain
mahogany, and three -leaf sumac. Ponderosa pine, pinyon -pine, Rocky Mountain juniper, and
one -seed juniper are present in this community at varying densities. Principal forbs include
Louisiana sagewort and fringed sage, with associated buckwheat, broom snakeweed, and prickly
pear. Principal grasses include blue gramma, mountain muhly, little bluestem (Schizachyrium
scoparium), and bristly wolfstail. Included in this community are scattered stands of Gambel oak
savannah characterized by dense, closed -canopy stands of mature Gambel oak with grassland
between. These areas occur most commonly adjacent to riparian forest. In some of these stands,
poison ivy and chokecherry grow in the understory. There is often a very dense understory of
perennials including giant hyssop, woodbine, virgin's bower (Clematis sp.), wild tarragon, and a
variety of other species. Dalmatian toadflax, common burdock (Arctium minus), and common
mullein (Verbascum thapsis) occur in this community. Average cover and height estimates for the
principal plant species in this community are provided in Table 5.
Table 5.
