the existing sand and gravel processing plant located on Morton Lakes where the
aggregate will be crushed, screened, washed and stockpiled. Finished sand and gravel
products will be used to supply an on-site ready mix concrete plant or hauled by truck to
customers via the Morton Lakes access to Highway 52 as approved by C-DOT.
Aside from combining the Holton and Morton acreage, the proposed amendment
includes a change in the sequence of the mining stages and a change in the location of the
primary Pit access to Highway 52 from Holton to Morton. The use of the existing
Highway 52 access originally designated in permit M-2007-008 will continue be used as
a secondary access only for farm, oil and gas service vehicles and RMCC equipment and
service vehicles.
Wherever feasible, reclamation will be done concurrently. The Morton-Holton site
will be reclaimed for two principal post-mining land uses, wildlife habitat and developed
water storage. It is estimated that approximately 7,500 acre-feet of water storage can be
developed at this site.
Depending upon the economy of the region and demand for sand and gravel, the life
of the Morton-Holton Lakes Pit is estimated to be approximately 15 years more or less.
