8.0 EXHIBIT G—WATER INFORMATION
8.1 Introduction
The combined Holton-Morton Lakes Sand and Gravel Pit lies in parts of the SE1/4 of
Section 1 and the NE 1/4 of Section 12, Township 1 North, Range 67 West, and Parts of the S W
1/4 of Section 6 and the NW 1/4 of Section 7 Township 1 North, Range 66 West of the 6th P.M.,
Weld County, Colorado. The site is approximately a mile west of Fort Lupton, immediately
south of Colorado State Highway 52, and west of Colorado State Highway 85.
The mining operation will be on either side of the South Platte River. It will affect the
South Platte River in the form of groundwater depletions due to evaporation and water uses
associated with mining. The impacts to the South Platte River have been mitigated without
injury to the vested senior water rights. Mining at the Morton-Holton Lakes site will last
approximately 15 years.
Morton Lakes (Permit M-2008-082)is being mined in conjunction with Holton Lakes to
the east(Permit M-2007-008). The Morton-Holton Lakes reclamation plan will create four slurry
wall sealed excavations that will not be hydraulically connected to the South Platte River alluvial
aquifer. The mining plan will also create four unlined excavations (Stages 1, 2, 3 and 9 acres in
the northeast corner of Stage 6 that total 62 acres. Stages 1 and 2 will be backfilled with wash
fines from the sand and gravel processing plant and Stages 3 and 9 acres of 6 will be backfilled
with overburden. The remaining four mining stages(4, 5, 6, and 7)will each be sealed prior to
mining. The combined lined storage on both of Morton-Holton Lakes will be approximately 253
acres for an estimated volume of 7500 acre-feet.
A substitute water supply plan(SWSP)pursuant to C.R.S. 37-90-137, has been approved
by the State Engineer's Office (SEO) for replacement of depletions associated with the Morton-
Holton Lakes sand and gravel mining operation. See section 8.6 of this Exhibit G.
8.2 Potential Water Resource Impacts
Ground Water Wells
The Morton Lakes Pit will have minimal impacts on the prevailing hydrologic balance.
Sand and gravel mining related impacts to ground water wells near the Pit will be mitigated
through the installation of slurry walls around the perimeter of stages 4, 5, 6 and 7 prior to
12
