Slurry Wall Design Report
Loloff Pit
5/24/2016
1 INTRODUCTION
The Loloff Pit site is located in Greeley, Colorado as shown in Figure 1. Loloff is planning a soil-
bentonite backfilled trench ("slurry wall')which will be installed from elevation 4634 ft into the
underlying bedrock. The slurry wall will enclose an area that is an active mine site; it will function
as a groundwater barrier. Performance of the liner and bedrock will eventually be demonstrated
using a 90-day liner test as defined by the "State Engineer Guidelines for Lining Criteria for
Gravel Pits (August 1999)". We designed the slurry wall to withstand up to 67 ft of differential
water head from outside the slurry wall to inside the pit; dewatering the pit to bedrock will result
in this differential.
The proposed slurry wall will be approximately 5,574 ft long. The minimum depths of the slurry
wall will range from approximately 45 to 75 feet, with an average trench depth of 60 ft and will
be a minimum of 36 inches wide. The slurry wall backfill will consist of a low permeability soil-
bentonite mixture. Parts of the slurry wall will be capped with a low permeability berm. Brierley
Associates has been retained by Hall-Irwin Corporation (Hall-Irwin) to perform geotechnical
investigation and design for the slurry wall and low permeability berm. Hall-Irwin will construct
the slurry wall and low permeability berm for Loloff Construction (Owner).
BRIERLEY
ASSOCIATES
Creating Space Underground
