Vt. Backfilling and Grading <br /> A. The Division proposes to approve the applicant's plan for disposal of acid-forming or <br /> toxic materials in a manner designed to prevent contamination of ground or surface <br /> waters (4.14.3(I)(a)). <br /> B. Since this is a truck and shovel operation, backfilling and grading of the overburden <br /> occurs simultaneous with overburden removal. The generation of excess overburden <br /> is not anticipated. <br /> VII. Revegetation <br /> A. The Division proposes to approve the use of introduced species in the reclamation seed <br /> mix. The applicant has submitted information which shows that the introduced <br /> species are desirable and necessary to achieve the approved post-mining land use, and <br /> are not poisonous or noxious (4.15.2). <br /> B. The Division proposes to approve the use of a cover crop as a means to meet soil <br /> stabilization requirements (4.15.4). <br /> C. At the request of landowners whose land has been mined through, replacemnt of the <br /> few small apple orchards should not be replacxed, but instead, made into irrigated or <br /> non-irrigated pasture. <br /> D. Methods to measure herbaceous cover and production, species diversity, and woody <br /> plant density are discussed in the permit application. These techniques include: <br /> New Horizon Mine I <br /> 1. Cover- Point intercept along a randomly located line transect or ocular estimates <br /> in randomly located sample quadrats. <br /> 2. Production - Clipping of I meter squared plots, oven drying and weighing. <br /> 3. Species diversity- Qualitative comparisons using cover and frequency values. <br /> 4. Woody plant density - Counting within randomly located belt transects. <br /> 25 <br />
