Climax Molybdenum Company HENDERSON MINE & MILL SWMP
Empire & Parshall, CO December, 2011
Page 4-2
Table 4.1, Description of Potential Pollutant Sources
PS # Potential
Pollutant Location Purpose Outfall
Likelihood
of Contact
with Storm
Water
Basis
1 Potable water
treatment chemicals.
Potable Water System Filtration and disinfection of the
mine’s domestic water supply.
OF-8b
(Butler Gulch)
Unlikely Spills could report directly to Butler Gulch. Drain has been blocked and chemicals used for
chlorination are stored within containment.
2 Miscellaneous
Contaminates
Underground
Warehouse Adit
(floor drain)
Temporary storage of equipment
for shipment underground. Stored
items include wood pallets,
conveyor rollers and tires. Former
explosive magazines.
0F-8a
(Butler Gulch)
Unlikely Groundwater seepage into bays of magazine and drainage trenches may become polluted by stored
product. The explosives magazines at this location are no longer used. Inclusion of this potential
source in the Plan is maintained in case such use is renewed in the future.
3 Ethylene Glycol-
50/50 Mix (antifreeze)
Compressor Cooling
Station/Storage Tank
The heat exchangers for
compressors and associated tanks
contain antifreeze.
OF-2
(W. Fork Clear Creek)
Unlikely Floor drains are plugged and leaks inside building would not flow out. Contaminated water that
collects in the building would be pumped into wastewater system or taken off-site. Uncontained
leaks would report to sheet flow of paved area and eventually to Outfall OF-2.
4 Cement and fly ash
particulates.
Cement and Fly Ash
Silos and Unloading
Area
Storage and unloading of cement
and fly ash associated with batch
plant.
OF-2
(W. Fork Clear Creek)
Probable Spill of product exposed to storm water would flow west across pavement and would eventually
report to Outfall OF-2.
5 Misc. Contaminates
associated with non-
hazardous waste and
recyclable products.
Waste Sorting and
Recycling Facility west
of #2 Shaft
Collection and temporary storage
of mine wastes prior to
transportation off-site. Also
includes a trash compactor, trailers
for recycling steel and other
materials, and a salvage wood pile.
OF-8a
(Butler Gulch)
Unlikely Materials that could be eroded and carried by storm water would report to Outfall OF-8a.
6 Hazardous wastes
and/or petroleum
products.
Hazardous Waste
Collection/Storage
Dock.
Storage of hazardous waste. OF-3
(W. Fork Clear Creek)
Unlikely Sloped floor would likely hold the volume of a drum. Floor dry is in the area to use in case of a
spill.
7 Sediment, chemicals,
oil, diesel fuel, pipe
debris and lubricants.
West Lay-down Yard Storage yard and temporary
staging area.
OF-1, OF-8c
(Butler Gulch)
Likely Unattended equipment scheduled for salvage, sale, long term storage or repair could have the
potential for oil and fuel leaks that could report to Outfalls OF-1 and/or OF-8c.
8 Sediment Sand and Gravel
Storage Pad
Gravel and sand for winter road
work.
OF-2, OF-9, OF-15,
OF-16
(W. Fork Clear Creek)
Probable Sediment could be carried by storm water to lower portion of surface area and report to Outfalls
OF-2, OF-9, OF-16 and/or OF-15.
9 Oil, diesel fuel, and
lubricants.
Salvage & Equipment
Yard/Warehouse and
Truck Scale
Storage of lumber, pipes, good
steel, new fill material, and
unattended vehicles scheduled for
salvage, sale, long term storage, or
repair. Warehouse contains new
product (oil and lubricants).
0F-7, OF-14
(Butler Gulch)
Likely Unattended vehicles scheduled for salvage sale, long term storage or repair, or using the truck scale
could have the potential for oil and fuel leaks that could report to Butler Gulch in sheet flow west
of Outfall OF-7 and/or OF-14. Warehouse building has an elevated concrete footer that would
contain liquid in the event of a spill inside the building. Building containment capacity exceeds the
volume of the largest single container in the storage area.
