• The second treatment train, within the IWTP, is designed to treat water
collected throughout the site via a series of existing sump pumps. This
treatment train includes clarifier#2, of equal size to clarifier#1 discussed
above, a smaller GE E8 RO system, and the site's current ion exchange (IX)
system. Sump water enters clarifier#2, where the pH will be adjusted and
flocculent added to aide in the settlement of heavy metals. Again, treated
water will flow via gravity from this clarifier and enter the large storage tanks,
discussed above; all the while the sludge will flow, via gravity,to the Backfill
Slurry Tank. A secondary booster pump will be connected to the large storage
tanks and provides the flow/pressure for either the E8 RO system or the IX
vessels, as required. Permeate and concentrate from the E8 RO is distributed
within the same pipelines as the Pro 100 RO. Treated effluent from the IX
system also flows within the same pipeline as the Pro100 RO.
As noted in the schedule, Cotter plans to install, commission and operate the two RO units for
several months before transferring the existing the IX system to the IWTP. This will allow a
sufficient amount of time to analyze product water, ensure proper functionality of both treatment
trains, and troubleshoot and correct any problems before removing and re-installing the IX
treatment system. The schedule conservatively includes a commissioning period of three to eight
months to prove and work out any problems discovered while operating the new systems. Cotter
plans to leave the existing IX facility in place throughout this commissioning period so that it can
be used to treat collected groundwater should the need arise.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
