PERMIT#:M-1976-027
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: LJW
INSPECTION DATE: April 8,2016
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was done in response to the Operator's request for a financial warranty reduction, SR01. The
Craig pit is a 112(c) operation that is in final reclamation located near Durango, CO. Final reclamation will be
achieved to support a post mining land use of Pastureland. The site is accessed by Highway 550, South of
Durango, and consists of 19.9 permitted acres. The site was not active during the inspection. The Operator,
Joe Schluter was present during the inspection. The Division Currently holds $158,692.74 in financial warranty
for the site. Three Photos accompany this report to illustrate the current site conditions.
The proper mine identification was noted at the entrance to the site. Access to the site is restricted by a
locked gate on Highway 550. All disturbances are contained within the permit boundaries. The permit
boundaries are outlined by a livestock exclusion fence to protect reclamation. Since the previous inspection,
dated November 30, 2015, the Operator has completed all backfilling, grading and re-seeding. As seen in
Photo Two, the areas that were seeded have been mulched and crimped. Two Technical revisions have been
completed since the previous inspection to alter the grading configuration, include a graveled area for
livestock feeding, leave stockpiles in place for landowner use, and update the seed mix.
The grading outlined in the TRO3 directly reflects the conditions of the site. The side slopes Shown in Photo
One, around the pit floor were graded to the approved 2H: 1V, and appear stable. No signs of erosion were
observed on the site. The pit floor, Photo Two, has been graded to approximately a 5H: 1V sloping to a small
catchment basin to convey storm water runoff. The pit floor also appears to be stable and shows no signs of
erosion. The entire site was revegetated in March of 2016 with the updated seed mix identified in TR04. The
side slopes were broadcast and hydro mulched, while the pit floor was drill seeded, and mulched. Evidence of
drill seeding and the hydro mulch on the slopes can be seen in Photo Three.
The Overall footprint of the site was in good condition, there was no trash or debris on site, and No noxious
weeds were noted during the inspection. There were no problems or possible violations noted at this time.
Due to the adequate reclamation work completed, and compliance with the reclamation plan, the Division has
approved the Operator's request for a financial warranty reduction. The reclamation cost will be updated to
include only secondary seeding. Enclosed with this report is the Approval letter for SR01 and the updated
reclamation cost estimate.
All responses to this report should be directed to Lucas West at the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
at 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203, by phone at (970)-243-6368 or by email at
lucas.west@state.co.us.
