It was determined that the oil was likely hydraulic oil
which had spilled while an outside salvage company was dismembering an old piece of equipment. The
volume of the contaminated soil was estimated to be 1-2 cubic yards.
A backhoe and dump truck were deployed to the site on May 25,2016.The operator of the backhoe first
had to backfill and reg-rade portions of the access road to climb up to the spill site.
Several pieces of the old equipment then had to be moved to clear the surface of the spill.
The operator extracted the contaminated soil with the excavator bucket and placed the material into a
small pile. Using the loader bucket,he then trammed six loads of the material down the road to the dump
truck. The excavated site was backfilled with clean native material, wheel-rolled and regraded(see
Photographs on next page).
Approximately 5 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed, transported and placed atop a RAP
(Recyclable Asphalt Product)stockpile at a FCM site. This RAP will be processed and reused in hot mix
asphalt production.
Sincerely c_j____
Matt R. arnahan
Resource& Environmental Manager
encl.
xc:Lucas West DRMS GJ ofc
ec w/encls:FCM-DRMS AR
P.O.Box 1969 0 Bayfield,CO 81122 0 970-241-2172 0 FAX:910-259-3631
