• OVERVIEW
Fish Creek Soil Investigation
An upland and alluvial valley floor (AVF) soil investigation was conducted along Fish
Creek for the RAG Twentymile Coal Company (TMCC) in Routt County, Colorado.
This investigation will be used to support TMCC's proposed construction of vent shaft
facilities and access roads to these facilities. This soil investigation complies with the
AVF requirements contained in Section 2.06.8 of the Regulations of the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board for Coal Mining. Soil descriptions were recorded from 12
continuous soil cores located along the proposed road corridors and vent shaft facilities
within and adjacent to the previously delineated Fish Creek AVF. The soil cores were
located in Township 5 North, Range 86 West, Section 11 (Map 1) and Section 17 (Map 2).
The soil investigation was conducted on October 21 and 22, 2003 by Kenneth E. Carlson,
a Certified Professional Soil Scientist (#2824) with Habitat Management, Inc.
SOIL CORE LOCATIONS
Twelve continuous soil cores were located and excavated with a Giddings drill rig and
with a manual soil bucket auger along the proposed vent shaft access road corridors
• and within the footprints of the two proposed vent shaft pads (Maps 1 & 2). Two soil
cores (#2 & #9) were placed within the previously delineated Fish Creek AVF at
locations that best represent the variable conditions within the AVF. Soil cores #2 and
#9 were excavated to the groundwater table. The remaining upland soil cores were
excavated to a lithic contact or parent material and did not encounter any groundwater.
SOIL DESCRIPTIONS
Each soil core was described by horizon following accepted United States Department
of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) soil survey procedures
for the following parameters: horizon depth; field texture; Munsell color (matrix and
mottles); root presence and depth; soil structure; and depth of ground water table.
Additional soil descriptions were recorded as needed. Photographs were taken of each
soil core after characterization. Major soil horizons are marked with orange markers
along a tape in each photograph. Field soil descriptions for each soil core are contained
Appendix 1. Photographs of the soil cores are contained in Appendix 2. NRCS soil
series descriptions of the potentially affected soils are contained in Appendix 3.
•
Habitat Management, Inc. 1 01/06/04
