CPW wildlife managers have visited the site several times throughout the spring of 2016,
attempting to locate a pair of golden eagles. The eagles had been observed nesting on
transmission lines south of the proposed site in 2012. At this time, the nest appears to be
inactive, and after multiple visits, no eagles have been observed in the area. Therefore,
disturbance issues with haul roads and construction traffic would not be an issue in this year,
2016, of inactivity. It is recommended that as the site continues to be mined in subsequent
years, CPW is contacted to monitor the once active golden eagle nest.
CPW protocol for burrowing owls should be adhered to throughout the proposed development.
Buffer distances of at least 150 ft are essential to the nesting success of the owls, and for
rearing their young. The entire burrowing owl protocol has been attached to previous
comment letters sent by CPW.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife appreciates the opportunity to comment on this reclamation
permit application. Please call the CPW Pueblo Area 11 Service Center at (719) 561-5300 if
you have any further wildlife questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mike Trujillo
CPW Area Wildlife Manager
