Seed Mix No. 5 (Table 20-5) is designated for reclaimed areas within the tie -across haul
road corridor. The mix has been designed for the wet saline or alkaline conditions and
heavy textured soils which are likely to be present within this area. In particular, the
western end of the haul road corridor and many of the drainages were wet and
saline/alkaline prior to construction of the haul road. Dryland wheat farming using
summer fallow techniques to enhance soil moisture levels is a major source of these
conditions which will continue following reclamation. Many of the species in the mix
will tolerate wet conditions and all are adapted to varying saline/alkaline conditions.
Soil textures on reclaimed sites will be clay loam to clay. All species in Seed Mix No.
5 are able to tolerate these heavier textured soils.
TABLE 20-5
Seed Mix No. 5 - Tie -Across Haul Road Areas Previously Occupied by
Greasewood and Meadow Types and Disturbed Lowland Areas
Species
Drill Rate*
P.L.S.
lbs/Acre
Seeds/Ft2
Recommended
Variety
Alzropyron elon atum
Tall wheatgrass
2.0
3.6
Largo
A ropyron smithii
Western wheatgrass
4.0
14.0
Rosana
Agropyron trachycaulum
Slender wheatgrass
2.0
7.2
San Louis
Agropyron riparium
Streambank wheatgrass 2.0
7.0
Sodar
El mus 'unceus
Russian wildrye
2.0
8.0
Bozoisky
El mus triticoides
Creeping wildrye
3.0
3.5
Shoshoni
Puccinellia distans
Alkali grass
0.5
14.0
Fults
Sporobolus airoides
Alkali sacaton
0.5
20.0
Native
Medicago sativa
Alfalfa
0.25
1.3
Falcata
type
Ceratoides lanata
Winterfat
0.5
1.3
Native
Atrinlex canescens
Fourwing saltbush
1_0
1_2
Native
TOTAL
17.75
81.2
*Broadcast rate is double the drill seeding rate
PR -01 Scr Revised 712011
