Williams, David Sabata, Ben Ludwig, Matthew Galloway of Smith
Environmental in 2007. The following description was derived from their
original site form. The site is situated at an elevation of 7400 feet on a bench
overlooking Terror Creek to the east. Artifacts were observed eroding from
an area devoid of trees and brush, along a gentle east -facing slope.
Surrounding the site are thick groves of Gambel oak and Mountain
mahogany. An access road runs through the site, and artifacts were
observed eroding down the road. The site boundaries were defined on the
basis of observable artifacts, which were only found in the clearing and along
the road. The site might be larger, but the surrounding brush precluded the
identification of additional artifacts. Subsidence should not affect this
prehistoric open camp. -
Environmental Assessment DOI-BLM-CO-S050-2013-0010 dated September
2013 states that subsidence associated with the Spruce Stomp lease is
expected to be minimal and would generally affect the area immediately
overlying those areas that are mined. Two historic properties are located
within the projected subsidence area; the remaining two significant sites
would not be affected by subsidence. It has been determined that, while two
historic properties are present within the projected subsidence area, it is not
expected that they would be adversely affected by subsidence within the
LBA tract (Lane, 2013). These sites would be monitored after project
activities commence to ensure the continued integrity of both sites; if
changes affecting the site are observed, stabilization or stipulations would be
conducted in consultation with Tribes and Colorado SHPO.
If cultural resources are uncovered during any approved construction project
that have not been identified previously, work will temporarily cease and the
resources evaluated according to proper procedures.
(5) Surface mining near underground mining
The proposed operation is an underground mine. There is no surface mining
planned in the permit or adjacent area.
PR -14 2.05-141 03/14
