The coal pile leachate, based on AW -1, AW -2 and AW -3 has average total
recoverable iron concentrations of 0.63, 0.53 and 3.48 ppm and average total
recoverable manganese concentration 1.24, 0.17 and 0.31 ppm respectively.
(2012 AHR). This equates an average iron concentration of 1.55 ppm and
manganese concentration of 0.56 ppm.
The total recoverable iron and manganese values for the river are obtained
from the Bowie No. 2 Mine, 2012 annual hydrologic report, average from
upper monitoring point. The following table presents the impact gob pile
leachate and coal pile would have if it flowed into the river at the rate of 7.4
and 0.7 gallons per minute respectively.
PHC North Fork of the Gunnsion River
Based upon the above calculation, if leachate from the gob and coal piles
reached the North Fork of the Gunnison River, it will not have a significant
impact on the quality of water in the river.
The pH of the gob pile and coal pile leachate based on the six alluvial wells
ranges from 7.1 to 7.6. The North Fork of the Gunnison River has an average
pH of 8.3. The gob pile and coal pile leachate would not have any adverse
affect of the pH of the River.
A plume of gob pile or coal pile leachate that reached the river would quickly
be diluted by the flow in the river to near ambient quality.
PR -14 2.05-120 06/14
Flow gpm
Flow cfs
Iron (ppm)
Mn (ppm)
North Fork
11,220
25.00
0.31
0.025
Gob Leachate Discharge
4.9
0.0165
4.92
1.66
Coal Pile Leachate
0.4
0.00156
1.55
0.56
Combined Flow
11,225.31
25.01181
0.3121
0.026
Based upon the above calculation, if leachate from the gob and coal piles
reached the North Fork of the Gunnison River, it will not have a significant
impact on the quality of water in the river.
The pH of the gob pile and coal pile leachate based on the six alluvial wells
ranges from 7.1 to 7.6.
