0 2.04.3
The old Blue Ribbon Mine operated from 1952 until 1963. During that time
the mine produced 35,805 tons. The mine produced coal for local markets
using a conventional "cut and shoot" method. The old Blue Ribbon Mine
produced from the E Seam or "Hawks Nest Seam ".
The modern day Blue Ribbon Mine is located next to the old Blue Ribbon
Mine. It operated from 1977 through 1985. During that time the mine
produced 922,858 tons. It was reclaimed in 1986. The mine produced coal
with modern continuous miners. Coal was transported from the face with
electric shuttle cars. Belt conveyors were used to transport the coal to the
surface. Electrical power was supplied to the mine by on site diesel
generators. The mine produced from the E Seam or "Hawks Nest Seam ".
The Farmer's Mine, located west of the permit area in Section 17 T. 13 S. R.
91 W. of the 6th P.M., was opened by Paonia area farmers in the early
1900's for use by townsfolk, in the schools, and in the Paonia power plant.
The mine operated from 1911 until 1921 with a total production of 51,294
• tons. The Emmons Brothers purchased the mine in 1959 and operated it
until 1965 when the local market declined. The highest production attained
was approximately 25,000 tons in 1964. The upper D -Seam was mined by
the pick- and - shovel method in the early years. Later, hand drilling and
explosives were used. Hauling was by mules and four -horse wagon teams.
A portion of the Somerset Mine is shown on Map 25, Previously Mined
Areas. Mining in the B -2 Seam is shown in the Bear Creek Canyon area and
under Hubbard Creek. The Somerset Mine was shut down at the end of
1985 when mining was occurring in panels west of Hubbard Creek in the B -2
Seam. The C -Seam workings were developed until about 1980 when U. S.
Steel idled work in the seam.
A portion of the Bowie No. 1 Mine east pod workings are also shown on Map
25. This area was mined from the late 1970's through mid 1980's when a
mine fire cut off access to the east pod reserve. The mine fire occurred on
June 1, 1986. The Bowie No. 1 Mine has not reestablished access to this
portion of the reserve.
• PR -12 2.04-6- 02/10
APPRVVC
11// 6/) C,
