Morton Lakes DRM&S Permit # M-2008- 082 TR-002
April 14, 2016
Overview of Morton Lakes Technical Revision (TR-002)
On March 26, 2009 the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining &
Safety (Division) approved Ready Mixed Concrete Company's (RMCC)
112c mining and reclamation permit for the Morton Lakes Pit (DRM&S
Permit # M-2008-082).
The purpose of this Technical Revision (TR-002) is to change the
Morton Lakes Mining Stage 5 to Mining Stage 2 and to change the current
reclamation of Stage 5 (2) from a sealed pit to wildlife habitat. Following
excavation of Stage 5 (2) this stage will be backfilled with wash fines from
the Morton sand and gravel processing plant. Once filled the fines, the
backfilled stage will be seeded with the enclosed Wash Fines Basin Seed
Mix.
As recently discussed with the Division, Ready Mixed Concrete
Company (RMCC) proposes to use Stage 2 to dispose of sand and gravel
wash fines that otherwise would be pumped, over the South Platte River, to a
disposal site on the east side of the river.
Stage 2 Reclamation Backfill Volume Calculations
The estimated volume of material needed to backfill Stage 2 to an
elevation three (3) feet below its pre-mining elevation equals 542,000 cubic
yards calculated as follows:
(16 acres x 43560 square feet per acre x a depth of 21 feet divided by 27
equals 542,000 cubic yards).
Sources of backfill include:
1. Stage 2 overburden and topsoil backfill equals 174,000 cubic yards
calculated as follows:
(16 acres x 43560 square feet x 6 feet of overburden divided by 27
equals 155,000 cubic yards).
This material will be stockpiled on Stage 2 and can be placed as
backfill using a dozer.
1
