April 10, 2016
re: Proposed quarry
To whom it concerns:
During my tenure as the Water System Operator for Turkey Canon Ranch Water District
(TCRWD) from March 2005 to December 2013, 1 observed that following blasting in the nearby
quarry there was a visible increase of silt or sediment in the water pumped from the wells.
Levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the water from the TCRWD wells was extremely high
(700-900 ppm). Calcium carbonate (CaCO3)levels were also extremely high (690 ppm). Both of
these high levels resulted in residents having to replace water heaters and dishwashers on a
fairly short life cycle(3 years). Whether this was directly related to the blasting in the quarry is
unknown.
Water pumped from the Red Rock Valley Estates Water District and Keeton Ranch Water wells
have much lower levels of TDS (150-250 ppm and CaCO3 (100-140 ppm). With no blasting being
conducted in this area we have no method at present to determine how it will affect the wells.
Richard W.
