Interf.f.i. e Memorandum
..................................................................................................................................................................
April 14, 2016
From: Leigh Simmons
.. Wa
To: Rob Zuberi .
Subject: Southfield Mine (Permit No. C-1981-014)
2015 AHR review
You requested that I review the 2015 Annual Hydrology Report for the Southfield Mine:
Compliance with the Surface Water Monitoring Plan
The five monitoring sites on Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali Creeks were monitored once in
the second quarter of 2015 (on May 6, May 7 and April 28, respectively). Flow was recorded at
all of the sites, and water quality samples were taken. The suite of water quality parameters
that samples were analyzed for was consistent with the list of suggested parameters in Exhibit
25, which was approved in June 2003 with MR -50. No monitoring was conducted in the fourth
quarter of 2015, however the water monitoring program was terminated with the issuance of
Technical Revision 43 (TR -43) in October 2015.
Ponds 4 and 5 treat storm water at the main mine site, and have CDPS 002 and 004 discharge
points associated with them respectively (permit number COG850045). Neither pond discharged
during the reporting year.
Ponds L-1 and L-2 treat storm water at the loadout, and have CDPS 001 and 002 discharge points
associated with them respectively (permit number COG850006. Neither pond discharged during
the reporting year. Reclamation of both of these ponds began in October and was completed in
late November, 2014.
Compliance with the Groundwater Monitoring Plan
The four groundwater monitoring points were monitored once in the second quarter of 2015.
MW -NW was reported as dry on May 27; the depth to water was recorded at MW -16 on June 6,
and at MW -23 and MW -65 on May 27, and water quality samples were taken and analyzed. As
discussed above, no monitoring was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2015.
`t.
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 P 303.866.3567 F 303.832.8106 http://mining.state.co.us "
John W.
