2-9 <br />• 2.1.4.2 Extent of the Coal <br />2.1.4.2.1 Loma Seam <br />The uppermost seam in the section remains officially unnamed, however, for identification <br />purposes, it is referred to as the Loma Seam. The Loma Seam attains a maximum thickness of <br />7 feet in the northeast comer of the lease block (Section 3), and thins rapidly as it extends <br />southward. The area in which the Loma Seam is greater than 5 foot minimum minable <br />thickness is less than 100 acres. The Loma Seam is not accessible from McClane Canyon and <br />is therefore not addressed in this mine plan. <br />2.1.4.2.2 Carbonera Zone <br />Table 2.1-3 illustrates that although the Carbonera Zone has been penetrated both in the <br />graben and adjacent to it, the coals are split into thin stringers scattered through 100 feet or <br />• more of section. There are drillholes that have penetrated mineable thickness of coal up to <br />eight feet thick in the Carbonera zone. Because of the Carbonera's lenticular bedding, any <br />proposed mining of the unit would have to be preceded by an intensive exploration program to <br />confirm the areal extent, continuity and quality of the seam. These problems have prohibited <br />consideration of mining this zone to date. For these reasons no quality or reserve data has <br />been compiled on the Carbonera zone in the mine plan area. <br />MC Volume 1 4.29-96 <br />
