Silver Wing Mine NOI
5. Water Quality Monitoring Plan:
Water Quality Monitoring Plan-Background
The Animas River as it flows past the mine site may be impacted by the following:
• Storm Water run-off flowing over the existing mine dump and access roads.
Storm water discharge is currently regulated by Storm Water Discharge Permit COR040176. Work
planned as part of this NOI will improve the water quality from storm water run-off by removal of
various "junk" items from the site which will physically allow improved drainage routing of storm water
run-off around dump materials that may contribute to metal loading impacts from the site.
• Mine portal discharge water.
Past and present sampling results have established that the mine portal discharge likely has an adverse
impact on the water quality of the Animas River.
• Natural springs and seeps on either side of the channel that may or may not be visible.
Natural springs and seeps may or may not exist and may or may not contribute to metal loading in the
Animas River as it passes the mine site. No inventory has been attempted to identify this possible
source. None of the work planned under the current NOI will impact this potential source.
• Mine portal discharge water seeping through the mine dump.
In 1998, a project was completed to route mine discharge water around the mine dump to reduce metal
loading in the Animas River. This project is still in place and requires minor periodic maintenance.
• Subsurface water inflows into the stream reach (in the river channel).
Past tracer studies by the United States Geological Survey downstream from the Eureka town site
(approximately 1 mile downstream from the Silver Wing mine) and in other geologically related stream
reaches in the Upper Animas River basin have defined a number of subsurface inflows within the
stream/river channels. No study was conducted in the reach of the Animas River as it passes the mine
site. It is not known if such springs exist in this reach and if they contribute to decreased water quality
in the Animas River as it flows past the Silver Wing mine site.
Water Quality Monitoring Plan Description
The following Water Quality Monitoring Plan proposed as part of this NOl is consistent with past site
monitoring activities: (See Exhibit 0)
• Stream grab sample (mine side) above disturbances from the Silver Wing mine (site SWM-1)
• Sample of portal discharge water prior to reaching the Animas River(site SWM-2)
1
