Crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) <br />Cool season, long-lived, drought tolerant, perennial <br />bunch grass. May be weakly rhizomatous. Adapted <br />to a wide range of sites but is most productive on <br />well -drained, medium textured soils. Good palatability <br />to livestock when green. Extensively introduced throughout <br />the West. <br />Western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithif <br />Cool season, saline -tolerant, moderately drought -tolerant, <br />strongly rhizomatous sod -former. Moderately palatable to <br />livestock and wildlife. Aggressive, with rapid seedling <br />establishment. Produces dense, medium height forage. <br />Arizona fescue (Festuca arizonica) <br />Cool season, drought -tolerant perennial bunchgrass with a <br />coarse, dense fibrous root system. Most commonly found on <br />thin, heavy soils but also occurs on deeper, coarser sites. <br />Useful for controlling soil erosion and improving rangelands. <br />Blue grama (Boute%oua gracilis) <br />Warm season, drought tolerant perennial open sod -former. <br />Grows in bunches in the south, bus as a sod -former in the <br />north, at higher elevations or when frequently watered or closely <br />grazed. Adapted to a broad spectrum of soils but thrives on <br />medium textured, well -drained sites. Most drought resistant of the <br />major grasses in the Great Plains and very resistant to grazing. <br />Highly palatable and nutritious year round.
