Because of its ephemeral nature and [he in-
terception of flows by the Canal, it is believed that
little or no aquatic life exists in Coal Gulch. The
Coal Gulch drainage area has a predominantly southerly
aspect and the stream gradient is in excess of 20 %. Of
the total area contained within the drainage basin, ap-
proximately 28% or 594 acres are in the permit area.
The surface water resources of Coal Gulch, located and
monitored by CWI, consist of two ephemeral, run off fed
stock ponds and one crest stage gauge and sediment sam-
pler within the drainage (refer to the Surface Water
Appendix, Volume 4 and Specific Basin Descriptions,
Vol~nne 5).
Terror Creek is a perennial stream which drains approx-
imately 29 square miles (18,560 acres). The dendritic
drainage pattern of tributary streams may be modified
in part by geologic structures Cfracture zones or
faults, refer to Map 2-8).
Peak stream flows for the East and West Forks of Terror
Creek occuc during spring sno~,melt and heavy rainstorm
events. Discharges from Terror Creek Reservoir enhance
continued stream flow from May-June through September-
October.
Diversions for agricultural uses are withdrawn through
Terror Creek Ditch from Terror Creek from May through
October. At the nearest point, this ditch is 1500 ft.
east of the Permit boundary. The Terror Creek drainage
is characterized by steep to vertical canyon walls and
nearly straight stream paths. Tributary to the North
Fork of the Gunnison, only 11.4% of Terror Creek's to-
tal drainage area is in the permit area.
