52.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SIIRFACE OR IINDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
• MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
2.04.7 Hydrology Description.
(1) (b) (Cont'd,)
core drilling within this strata indicated [hat frac-
ture zones are not well developed. Similar observa-
tions were made in the underground mine. Fracture
zones or zones of lost circulation do not appear to ex-
tend from hole to hole. Fracture and fault zones, al-
though encountered, are not well developed (refer to
Mau 2-8).
The groundwater flow direction in the sandstone strata
below the "D" coal seam is from the recharge area near
the outcrop of these strata north toward the lower
parts of the basin. An interpretation of the potentio-
metric surface in this water bearing strata is shown on
Map 4-2.
The "Po[entiometric Surface Map of the Mesaverde Forma-
tion", Map 4-2, was prepared utilizing exploration data
obtained via geophysical logging during June and July,
1982. Table 10, entitled "Static Water Levels in Ex-
• ploration Drill Holes" located in Volume 10 (confiden-
tial) , was compiled primarily from the geophysical logs
run during the exploration process. Exploration pro-
jects completed in earlier years were not suited to ob-
taining hydrology data.
In drill holes 26 through 48, undocisnented drill-log-
ging procedures were undertaken. Few field records of
the type and amount of drilling fluid, casing (if any),
and logging activities are available. It is suspected
that many of the holes were filled with water in order
to facilitate [he electrical logs (spontaneous poten-
tial and resistivity), such that the static water level
recorded should be considered dubious at best. In the
holes n,snb ered 50 through 59, more documentation ex-
ists. These holes were drilled with bentonite based
mud chich can greatly inhibit the hydrologic properties
due to mud cake within the drill hole.
The holes used for construction of the potentiometric
surface map are numbered 60 through 72. During this
phase of exploration, a radical change from convention-
al drilling mud to air and foam was incorporated.
