Corley Comment #4
In an October 29, 2015 email, Dr. Corley expressed concerns about weeds at the mine site, in particular
mullein, cheat grass, bind weed, cranes bill, and knapweed. He also reiterated his concerns about debris
at the Monarch Fan, the spring in the Magpie Diversion, and new subsidence cracks.
Response to Comment #4
The Division did not see any new subsidence cracks in the areas affiliated with SL -03 during the
inspection or subsequent to the inspection. The other issues were addressed in previous email
communications.
Corley Comment #5
In a November 24, 2015 email, Dr. Corley asked if the Newlin Creek topsoil stockpile had been
officially designated as an SAE.
Response to Comment #5
The Newlin Creek topsoil stockpile has been officially designated as an SAE (see Map 30 and Appendix
19 in the PAP).
Corley Comment #6
In a January 15, 2016 email, Dr. Corley suggested that the south inlet culvert to Pond 5 was never
approved by the Division and that holes in the metal of the culvert are a "defect."
Response to Comment #6
The south inlet culvert to Pond 5 is approved by the Division and the structure is shown on an approved
map (Map 18). The holes in the culvert have been repaired.
Corley Comment #7
Also in the January 15, 2016 email, Dr. Corley noted that the side tunnel off of the truck tunnel is not
shown on any maps in the permit application package (PAP).
Response to Comment #7
The side tunnel off of the truck tunnel does not need to be shown on any maps in the PAP as it is an
underground structure.
In a January 21, 2016 email, Dr. Corley identified problems with the sediment demonstration in the SL -
03 application.
Response to Comment #8
The Division finds that EFCI produced a sufficient sediment demonstration in the SL -03 application and
subsequent adequacy responses.
Corley Comment #9
In a January 23, 2015 email, Dr. Corley stated that he found a well casing in the portal area, that there is
sediment in the south inlet culvert to Pond 5, and that there are bare areas with some erosion on the
Magpie Diversion berm.
Response to Comment #9
EFCI found this to be a loose piece of pipe. They removed it on February 19, 2016.
Southfield Mine SL -03 Page 5 of 21 February 23, 2016
