these sites. The mapping from this effort is not reproduced since the soils mapping unit names
and descriptions were changed by the NRCS in the final soil survey. The locations of the six
undisturbed soils samples, labeled as S 1 through S6 and the five topsoil stockpiles, labeled as
SP5 through SP 10 sampled in this effort are shown on Map 2.04.9-2, New Horizon North Mine -
Soils Map and on Map 2.04.9-3, New Horizon North Mine - Topsoil Salvage Map.
The results obtained from the sampling of the 18 parameters evaluated from the 16 samples of
undisturbed soil material analyzed are presented in Table 2.04.9-1, 1979 Laboratory Analysis of
Undisturbed Soil Samples. Subsequent to the analysis of these samples, five of these sample sites
were disturbed by mining. As a result only sample site 79-3 is still undisturbed. However these
data are indicative of the characteristics of the soils materials that were salvaged and used for
reclamation on the Rice Tract.
The results obtained from sampling of the 16 parameters analyzed from six topsoil stockpiles
sampled in 1979 are presented in Table 2.04.9-2, 1979 Laboratory Analysis of Topsoil
Stockpiles on the Rice Tract. The analysis of composite samples from these topsoil stockpiles for
coarse fragment content and metals is found in Table 2.04.9-3, Composite Analysis of Topsoil
Stockpiles on the Rice Tract. The data are representative of the soil material that was used to
reclaim the 65.55 acres of topsoiled reclamation found on the Rice Tract and shown on Map
2.04.9-2, New Horizon North Mine - Soils Map.
1978-1984 NRCS SOILS SURVEY
The Natural Resource Conservation Service (MRCS), in cooperation with the Colorado
Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) and the United States Department of the Interior,
Bureau of Land Management (BLM), has published an undated on-line soil's survey entitled
Soils Survey of San Miguel Area, Colorado Parts of Dolores, Montrose and San Miguel
Counties that covers the entire project area. According to the preface of this report, the major
portions of the field work were completed in 1978-1984 and this report is based upon soils
names and descriptions approved in 1986. This survey is reported to represent conditions in the
survey area in 1986. According to a February 11, 2008 letter from the NRCS Soils Scientist in
Montrose, addressing the nearby New Horizon Mine, this survey was probably completed to an
order II survey intensity. A copy of this soils mapping is presented on Map 2.04.9-1 - NRCS
Soils Map.
According to this soils mapping, there are seven NRCS soils mapping units located within the
New Horizon North Mine permit area. This includes soils mapping units 10 - Aquolls, 0 to 3
percent slopes; 71 - Nyswonger silty clay loam, 1 to 4 percent slopes; 77 - Pinon - Progresso
Loams, 3 to 12 percent slopes; 78 - Pinon - Ustic Torriorthents Complex, 5 to 30 percent slopes;
81 - Progresso Loams, 3 to 6 percent slopes; 82 - Progresso Loams, 6 to 12 percent slopes; and
88 - Rock Outcrop - Orthents Complex, 40 to 90 percent slopes. The NRCS soils mapping is in
Section 2.04.9 Page 2 Sept. 2015 (TR -11)
