Pinon Series <br />Depth class: shallow <br />Drainage class: well drained <br />Permeability: moderate <br />Landform: escarpment, hill, mesa, ridge, structural bench <br />Parent material: residuum weathered from interbedded sandstone and shale <br />Elevation: 5,400 to 7,400 feet <br />Slope: 1 to 30 percent <br />Climatic data: <br />Average annual precipitation: 10 to 15 inches <br />Average annual air temperature: 45 to 48 degrees F <br />Frost free period: 90 to 130 days <br />Taxonomic class: Loamy, mixed, mesic Lithic Ustollic Calciorthids <br />Typical Pedon <br />Map unit in which located: Pinon-Bowdish-Rock outcrop complex, 3 to 30 percent slopes <br />Location in survey area: about 400 feet west and 2,400 feet north of the southeast corner of Sec. <br />12, T. 48 N., R 18 W. <br />A---0 to 5 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak fine granular <br />structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strongly effervescent; <br />slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. <br />Bk -5 to 16 inches; pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; moderate <br />fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic, <br />40 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; violently effervescent, moderately alkaline; <br />abrupt wavy boundary. <br />R-16 inches; hard sandstone and interbedded shale. <br />Range in Characteristics <br />The particle -size control section is sandy clay loam, gravelly loam, or loam. The clay <br />content is 18 to 27 percent. Bedrock is at a depth of 10 to 20 inches. <br />A horizon: The content of rock fragments is 0 to 10 percent, and the fragments are <br />predominately gravel -sized. The hue is 5YR or 7.5YR <br />Bk horizon: The content of rock fragments is 0 to 25 percent, and the fragments are <br />predominately gravel -sized.
