PERMIT#:M-2001-051
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:ECS
INSPECTION DATE:February 3,2016
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection of the North Taft Hill Expansion Site M2001-051, a 112c sand and
gravel permit now operated by Martin Marietta Materials (MMM). The inspection was conducted by Eric Scott
of DRMS. DRMS visited the site with MMM representative Julie Mikulas at approximately 10:00. Although
the site is still listed by DRMS as being in its second 5 year period of Temporary Cessation (TC), it was noted
that active mining has resumed. MMM will need to submit documentation to DRMS detailing when the site
resumed active operations.
The mining appeared to be progressing according to the approved plan, although there was discussion of
changing the final reclamation configuration from two unlined ponds to only one unlined groundwater reservoir
by mining through the former residential access road. A TR will need to be submitted to DRMS for approval if
the reclamation configuration will deviate from the approved plan.
It was also noted that the bond for the site will need to be increased significantly at this time to account for the
exposure of groundwater in the active mining area. DRMS will calculate the cost of a slurry wall installation to
a depth of 20' surrounding the active mining cell at the site. The surety increase will be sent to MMM under
separate cover. The bond increase will be required to be posted within 60 days of the date of the letter, and will
need to remain in place until a permanent groundwater augmentation plan for the final configuration of the site
has been approved.
No other issues were noted during this inspection. The attached photos were taken near the site entrance
looking west and panning in order from south to north.
Inspection Contact Address
Julie Mikulas
Martin Marietta Materials,Inc.
1800 N.Taft Hill Road
Fort Collins,CO 80521
