Page 3-7 2015 NS Mine Plan Modification
1/5/2016 Section 3 General Site Conditions
Also, previously recorded isolate 5RB5505 was relocated and because new UTM’s
were calculated, a new form was provided. Three cultural sites (5RB8380,
5RB8381.1 and 5RB8382), three paleontological localities (5RB8384, 5RB8385 and
5RB8408), and six cultural isolates (5RB8383, 5RB8386 - 5RB8390) were newly
recorded.
All reports documenting the investigations have been submitted to the BLM White
River Field Office (WRFO) in Meeker. Additional studies will be commissioned as
directed by the BLM or other appropriate regulatory agency.
3.3.1. Cultural Resources
Numerous cultural resource inventories have been conducted within NS lease areas
between 1980 and 2015. Please see Appendix 3A for most recent cultural study,
including an inventory of all sites in the general vicinity of NS operations. Eight
cultural sites were field evaluated in 2014 as eligible for the National Register of
Historic Places. Construction in the vicinity of two of the proposed 2014 drill hole
locations was monitored due to the proximity of eligible sites. In addition, road
construction was monitored in the vicinity of cultural site 5RB1885. Additional
cultural investigations will be undertaken as required, prior to disturbance of any
areas.
3.3.2. Paleontological Resources
The 2014 GRI study (Appendix 3A) found three newly recorded paleontological
localities, field evaluated as significant. One paleontological locality (5RB8408)
occurs near a 2014 proposed pad location. This site includes numerous floral and
faunal remains. Identifiable faunal remains include (but are not limited to): the head
of a right femur of a large mammal, a fragment of a possible innominate, a bone
fragment with an intact articular surface, a tooth tip, and several other complete
specimens. Floral specimens were limited to fossilized wood fragments. Vertebrate
specimens are especially important to the fossil record, and therefore, the locality is
evaluated as significant.
