OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT
Pike National Forest
Puma City Mine Plan of Operations
RECF!VED
JAN 202016
DIVISION OF RECLAMATION
MINING AND SAFETY
The South Park Ranger District is seeking public comment on a Plan of Operations (P00) for
the Puma City Mine project on behalf of operator David McHugh.
The project is located on the Puma City Mine unpatented mining claim. The project is located in
Park County approximately 7.5 miles northwest of Lake George, CO in Section 5 of Township
12 South, Ranger 71 West, 6th P.M, at an elevation of approximately 9,090 feet.
The proposal is to authorize David McHugh (Operator) a Plan of Operations to develop and mine
gold on the Puma City claim, north of Pulver Gulch, within the South Park Ranger District
northwest of Lake George, Colorado in Park County.
The Operator proposes to use hand tools to excavate a previously backfilled mine shaft.
Excavations will be in the form of a trench, with maximum dimensions of 6 ft. x 2 ft. x 6 ft.,
including storage for overburden and topsoil. Over the approximately 20 acres that is the claim,
the operator will disturb no more than 0.06 acres total. The site will all be accessed from
existing National Forest System Roads (NFSR 704) and a historic pack trail with dimensions of
approximately 565 ft. x 5 ft.; no new roads or trails are proposed. Once the trench has been
mined out, it will be reclaimed, and the topsoil restored using the approved site-specific seed mix
recommended by the Forest Service for the reseeding, if necessary. Other aspects of the
proposal include protective fencing and signing to be erected as necessary for safety.
Materials and supplies will include shovels, picks, small hammers, a wheel barrow, safety hats
and goggles, and reclamation seed. No chemicals will be used, and fuel will be stored in
approved containers and removed daily.
There will be no new construction or permanent structures. No timber will need to be cleared. If
topsoil exists, it will be segregated and temporarily stored, waste rock will be used as part of the
backfill during final reclamation. There will be no tailings and no milling. No blasting or
drilling will occur. The excavation will be no more than 6 feet deep. There will be no suction
dredging or settling ponds.
No mechanized equipment will be used. The excavation will be backfilled and re-contoured
upon completion of operations.
The proposed action description and other information are available for review at the South Park
Ranger District. Additional information regarding this action can be obtained from: Amy
Titterington, 320 Highway 285, Fairplay CO 80440, (719) 836-2031,
amyjtitteringtonAfs.fed. us.
