VEGETATION INFORMATION EXHIBIT J
Existing Plant Communities
The flat area of the site is a field that was cleared of sagebrush community and was planted in
grasses many years ago. This field was allowed to revert back to a combination of sagebrush,
rabbitbrush and other herbaceous vegetation over the past 15 years.
The other community which exists in the vicinity of the Berry Pit is the original sagebrush and
rabbitbrush community on the slopes which was never altered to a grass community. These areas
have a higher percentage of shrubs and forbs and a lesser percentage of grasses.
Map I/J shows both communities within the mine permit area and adjacent areas. Immediately below
the permit area is an irrigation ditch which has allowed alfalfa and other crops in the meadow along
the river but these areas will not be affected by the operation.
In the shrub/grass communities in the permit area, perennial cover was approximately 20%. Annual
forage production is approximately 1000 pounds per acre.
Vegetation Report
Detailed information on the vegetation communities is found in the report provided by Alvin Jones
of the local SCS office to United Companies in April of 2001. This report is provided in Appendix
D. It includes species identified as well as reclamation recommendations, which are re -iterated in the
section on the Reclamation Plan.
Berry Pit 3/02 26
